Cowan Mill, Lewiston after fire

A couple of weeks ago I posted photos of Great Falls with some of the old Lewiston, Maine mills in the background, and the week after I shot those photos one of the mills burned. I went back to the same spot the day after the fire to photograph Cowan Mill again. This was shot about 24 hours after the fire, on July 16. The remains have since been demolished. In the background of this photo is the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

Milkweed

Milkweed plants have flowers this time of year, before they grow the pods with the fuzzy seeds.

Berries I picked last week. They made delicious pies.

All Soul's Chapel, Poland Preservation Park

This is the 1912 All Soul's Chapel, located at Poland Spring Preservation Park. I posted a photo of it back in January (chapel). The park is also where the original spring house for Poland Spring water is located (picture of that is here: source )

Also located on the grounds is the Maine State Building, which you can see on the right in this photo. It was built for the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair and moved here.

Groucho Barx

I was going to stop with the orange flowers, but then I edited a couple more day lily photos that I liked.

For variety, here's a photo of Baxter doing his Groucho Marx impression:

I love orange flowers

What's this? More orange flowers? No way!

P.S. Sharon, I have no idea what kind of flowers those are in my last post. They were at a public garden, but there was no identifying info.

More orange flowers

Continuing on with my orange flower theme...

Day Lilies

I love, love, love, the color of day lilies and taking macro photos of their centers with the rich orange of the petals as background.

Orange flower

This looks like a poppy to me, but I never saw the front side of it, so I'm not sure.

Raspberries

I picked these raspberries today.

Wild columbine

I wrote down what kind of flower this is somewhere back when I took the photo, but I can't remember where. (Edited to add: it's wild columbine.)

Butterfly

According to my Audubon field guide, this is a silver-bordered fritillary on (what I think is) Canada thistle.

Great Falls again

Not exactly a clear mountain stream.
A black and white version of the photo I posted the other day.

Bird of the Day: grosbeak

This is a rose-breasted grosbeak, female (thus the lack of a rose breast).

Scenes from my bird feeder, part 9 million and one

Still not a great photo of an indigo bunting (and a goldfinch) but better than the one I previously posted. Spotting him gives me birdwatcher's high.

Look at 'em all sharing the feeders. Makes me want to sing "We Are The World." Two goldfinches, a chickadee, and a female rose-breasted grosbeak.

Back to the Falls

I'm redoing my post to post the correct photo. The Great Falls/views to Lewiston that I've been posting photos of? The building on the right hand side of this photo is currently burning down. :-(

Love the Sox

As a matter of fact, I do.
Hubby and I went to the Red Sox game Sunday, and there was a cool sky writer.
I just brought my little point and shoot to the game. It was a beautiful day.
These guys in front of us were obviously brothers. I loved their matching bald heads so much I just had to take a picture. They left the game early, and one of their wives rolled her eyes and said, "It's past their bedtime." It was 4:00. Ha!

Zinnia bud

I've posted several photos of my pink zinnia plant, and I'm glad I shot photos when I did because the rain and wind knocked all the blooms off. I was hopeful when I spotted this bud, but so far I haven't had any new blooms. I like the layers of the bud (it reminds me of an artichoke) and the black tips.

Mini Roses

The worst-taken-care-of rose bush in America lives in front of my house, and despite its neglect, it blooms like crazy every year.

Fireworks

What else for photo of the day today but fireworks shots from last night? I was so glad the rain stopped so we could see them. And today was absolutely beautiful--finally!
